Buddhist cuisine in Chinese style_f0374041_09461889.jpg

Buddhist cuisine in Chinese style_f0374041_13402834.jpg

Here is Manpuku-ji Temple associated with Ike no Taiga. He visited this temple for the first time at the age of seven. If the Buddhist cuisine in Chinese style had been served…?

There walks Matajiro(Taiga's childhood name)on the pavement! He is attended by his teacher of calligraphy, Priest Ichii of Danno-Horin-ji Temple. The child is curious about the exotic precincts that is different from that of Japanese tem
ples.

Monologue of Taiga

We first visited the memorial hall of the founder of this temple, Ingen Zenji(Zen master). Many pots of lotus greeted us. Master Ichii said,
" They are not only the symbol of Buddhism but also the flower associated with Ingen Zenji, who taught us Japanese that the lotus root is edible."
" The lotus root? "
" You should not have yet eaten it. "

Walking on the cloisters, dry sounds sounded. A priest in black is beating a big wooden gong in the shape of fish.
" Hurry up, he is announcing the mealtime! "

In the dining hall, a table and chairs were prepared for us. Master Ichii explained me.
" In general, four persons surround a table and share one dish friedly. "
Before the meal, we read out five verses.
" The meal also is a training. We should give thanks to the people and reflect ourselves. We must eat them temperately as the medicine."

" Ingen Zenji introduced this vegitarian diet including Ingen(kidney beans), lotus root, etc. The sesame and sesame oil are used in these bean curds and this kudzu sauce. "

Matajiro was surprised the lotus root was edible after the flower had fallen. The pseudo-steamed fish paste was made of Chinese yam!

The mouthfeel of the lotus root, crispy and a little sticky was rediscovered by snowdrop at China town in London while her four-month-long journey far from Japanese cuisine.

In fact, Taiga was invited to this temple not for the meal but for an important matter. (To be continued to the blog by snowdrop-nara, in July)

Lily of the field or Windröschen_f0374041_11065436.jpg

Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin;
and yet I say to yout that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these
― Mathew 6-28~29
The lilies in Bible(κρίνα)is said to be the anemone of the field of Galilee.

(Wish Upon a Star)

The name Anemone derives from anemos: wind; storm in Greek and anima: wind; soul; life in Latin.
Anemo was a nymph at Flora’s court, who fell in love with Zephyr, Flora's husband,
and was turned into a flower, Anemone. Zephyr still caresses her every spring.
Snowdrop looked for the source in Ovidius' but could not find it.
The windflower in English, and die Windröschen in German.

In Kojiki, a beauty Isukeyori-hime was loved by Emperor Jinmu by Sai River surrounded by Sai (lily)-flowers. Snowdrop dramatized this chapter in her articles last year, where it was not the emperor but his attendant with tattooed eyes that she loved.

The above poem by Isukeyori-hime refers to the bird tsutsu: Himalayan (Oriental) cuckoo, which snowdrop often heard this April, for the first time in her house!
