ゆるるものに寄す ＊ À Libellule

わが家に蜻蛉（とんぼ）が一匹迷いこんで来ました。翡翠（ひすい）色の体、艶やかな翅（はね）、つぶらな蜻蛉玉の目…まるで精巧な工芸品のようです。かすかな風にゆれると、紋つきの羽がきらめきます。

A dragonfly (tombo) strayed into our sun parlor. The jade-green body, the netlike wings, the round eyes like tombo-dama (glass beads)…. It looks like an elaborate craft object. When a breeze touches it, four blazoned wings glisten.

蜻蛉はむかし秋津（あきつ）と呼ばれていました。秋津島とは日本のこと。日本の象徴、蜻蛉をサインに用いたと思われる英国の画家がいます。ホイッスラーの絵の左下をご覧ください。これは蝶とされていますが、赤いのはひょっとすると蜻蛉ではないでしょうか。

The dragonfly “Tombo” used to be called “Akitsu”, which is a symbol of Japan. A British painter, James Whistler invented a monogram signature ― a stylized butterfly based on his initials JW. But it seems to me that the red portion is a dragonfly in this Japonisme painting.
